Church, located in the
    heart of Peekskill, has been
serving God's people since 1859. As a Catholic community united
by faith in Jesus Christ, We are called
    to proclaim the kingdom of
    God. Nourished
by the Holy Eucharist and the Gospel, our parish
strives to reflect Christ’s light to the world through worship,
    education and

Assumption Church is sponsoring a Blood Drive on Sunday August 10, 2014 in Father Wilson Hall between the hours of 8:30 AM and 2:00 PM.  We look forward to your blood donation for the Hudson Valley Blood Services.  Blood Donors please bring personal identification and know your Social Security Number for registration.  Please give the Gift of Life.

Assumption Church will sponsor Theology on Tap on August 18 at the Birdsall House, 970 Main Street at 7:30PM. The talk will be, “Life is a Promise for Happiness," given by Dr. Elvira Parravicini who is the founder of a hospice program which assists terminally ill newborns and their families.  She will speak to us about the beauty that this medical and human care has brought to the lives of children and parents facing great difficulty, and how this program was born from faith, i.e. the recognition of the presence of Christ through any and every reality of life. Dr. Elvira Parravicini is a neonatologist at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

CCD registration is going on now.  Students must re-register each year.  If you are registering your child for the first time, kindly bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate and a copy of their baptismal certificate.  Mrs. Cathy Bischoff will be at the CCD office for you to register during regular CCD office hours, which are Mon. & Tues. 4PM - 7PM, Wed. 2PM – 9PM and Thurs. 10AM – 1PM.  If you have any questions, please call the CCD office: (914) 737-2231.  There will be registration for CCD after all Masses on August 24 and after all the Masses on August 30 and 31.  You must register your child each year.

Please join us in welcoming Father Fidel Cruz, Assumption’s new Parochial Vicar. Born and raised in Mexico, Father Cruz speaks English and Spanish fluently.  After completing his theological studies in Vera Cruz, Mexico, he was ordained on January 5, 2005.  He served as his bishop's priestly secretary before coming to the United States in 2007.  He has served at Blessed Sacrament parish in the Bronx and Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Manhattan.  We wish Father Cruz sincere best wishes and many years of joyful, priestly service here at Assumption.  Welcome to Assumption, Father Cruz!

    Forty Hours Devotion

Once again, we will have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for 40 consecutive hours (with the exception of Holy Mass) according to the ancient practice known as “Forty Hours.” Starting at 7:00 PM on Monday, August 11 and concluding at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 13.  The Forty Hours Devotion requests parishioners to sign up to accompany our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament in one-hour slots. Sign-ups will take place in the weeks before the Feast of the Assumption.

To our knowledge there will not be a Festa Italiana this year in the City of Peekskill. However, because this is still our patronal feast, we want to celebrate with Forty Hours Devotion, which is exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for 40 consecutive hours (with the exception of Holy Mass).  Forty Hours will begin on Monday, August 11 at 7:00 PM and will end on Wednesday, August 13 at 11:00 AM. Parishioners will be asked to reserve one-hour slots to accompany our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament.  Sign-ups will take place in the weeks before the Feast of the Assumption.

Also, we look forward to an outdoor Fire Rosary with a procession, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, on Thursday, August 14 the Vigil of the Feast of the Assumption. There will be a 7:45PM gathering in the Church and then a procession with our image of Our Lady to the site of the Fire Rosary in the parking lot, followed by a candle-light procession through the streets.

Assumption Cemetery is graced with a very unique feature not found in any other cemetery to our knowledge: our Stations of the Cross Columbarium Garden. There are only 21 niches still available. The price of a niche is $1400 - $2000, which gives you the right to inter the cremains of two people. If you have been thinking of purchasing a niche, please call Mr. John Bischoff at 914-736-5981, Monday to Friday for information and/or an appointment.  For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word that describes a collection of niches to house urns containing cremated human remains. Usually inscribed with the person’s name and dates of birth and death, columbaria are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a 'churchyard’ or landscaped terrace. May the Lord who has blessed this project now be a final resting place for many of our loved ones.

The Oblates to the Blessed Trinity will be offering several vocational discernment retreat opportunities for young women, ages 17-35, interested in exploring the possibility of a religious vocation.  These retreats will be scheduled throughout the year.  The first will be a one-day retreat scheduled for Saturday, August 30 from 8:30AM to 6:00PM.  The retreat will take place in the Motherhouse/Novitiate of the Sisters located on: 306 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction NY 12533.  Come and see what the Lord has prepared for you!  For more information or to register call: Sister Madeline at 646-460-9168 or email

Assumption has received a gift of a Chalice that was used by Father James Finnigan throughout his priesthood.  Father Finnigan grew up in Peekskill and served at Assumption for many years.  We are starting a program that will provide an opportunity for families in the parish to keep this beautiful Chalice in their home for one week.  The purpose of the Travelling Chalice Program is to encourage families to take time, each day, during the week the Chalice is in their home to pray together to promote vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life.  In the future, the Chalice will be presented to the first new priest from Assumption Parish. For more information or to schedule a visit in your home, please contact Ellen Bennett at 914-788-6261 or Annie Zuzarte at 914-610-5035.

Assumption Church has its own television show called Catholic Peekskill featuring interviews and information relating to our Catholic Faith.  Catholic Peekskill airs weekly on Cablevision TV Channel 15 on Tuesday at 9:30, Wednesday at 5:30pm and Sunday at 4:00 pm and can be seen from Peekskill to Tarrytown; and, on FIOS TV Channel 37 on Tuesday and Wednesday, 6:00pm  in Westchester, Orange, Rockland, Putnam and Duchess counties.
